Starting from outside, you can see that the Guyer is a large two-story
building. Since its beginnings in Lewisville, it has been completely
renovated, as we will see later in the tour. Although some things have
been renovated, other sentimental pieces have been left for the public and for
the players at Guyer.
The
auditorium is actually on the second floor of this buildilng. You might be
confused by the layout of the building, and an explanation that the building is
built into a hillside, so that when one exits on the second floor to ground
level may set you straight. The doors on the right go to the costume
room. They hold all of the Guyer's costumes and some props. Before
it was the costume room, south Henry School Corporation had its offices in
there. Before that, it was a bank. The lobby was also once used as a
dry goods store, but has also been a hardware store, a mortuary, an antique
shop, and a Sunday School room for a church. Putting the auditorium on the
second level enabled the owners of the building to earn extra money from first
floor rent.
Many new
things have been added to enhance Guyer's appearance, including the window
logos showing our address and phone number, brand new windows in the front and
back of the upstairs auditorium, and new easy-locking doors graciously donated by Ruth
Hayworth in memory of her husband.
The photos below are an archival timeline of
the Guyer's front facade. These pictures range from the 1900s to the
present. Hover your mouse over each picture to see the year it was taken.
